Meghan Markle's candidness about her mental health struggles in her latest TV interview may reignite fresh fears within the Royal Family.
As she opened up about past tough times, the Duchess of Sussex sparked speculation that she has more to say on the subject – but only once she feels the time is right. And now sources say that she may open up about it in an upcoming memoir.
Meghan, who first revealed that she had suicidal thoughts three years ago, spoke about the difficult time she went through when she lived in the UK during a recent CBS interview.
Meghan, 43, is thought to be planning to elaborate even more on her experiences in an explosive new book. “The talk among their friends is that it’s time to take the gloves off and do away with the diplomacy,” a source tells Closer.
“There’s so much demand for Meghan to speak out, whether that’s in the form of another sit-down interview or even her own memoir. She has the potential to make an absolute fortune and clear up a lot of questions.”
It is thought that Meghan’s desire to speak out has also been fuelled by the recent snub from the palace after she, Harry and their children didn’t receive an invite to the Royal Family’s annual summer gathering at Balmoral.
“It doesn’t exactly shock Harry and Meghan that they’re not invited considering they’re not even on speaking terms at this point, but it feels very much like a personal attack designed to hurt and embarrass them,” the source continues. “It’s not just about pride or hurt feelings, there are very ugly repercussions for them when this constant narrative that they’re family outcasts keeps getting fed. It impacts their brand as well as their morale, and it has the potential to put them more at risk.
“They’re now being forced to figure out a strategy to fight back, and one option on the table is to go all-out with a big tell-all from Meghan where she completely lays out her side of the story.”
Meghan first spoke publicly about her suicidal feelings in 2021 in a TV interview with Oprah Winfrey. She revealed that her mental health suffered during her pregnancy with her son Archie amid the pressure of royal life. Since then, she and Harry, 39, have stepped down from royal duties and moved to Montecito, California, where they live with Archie, five, and their daughter Lililbet, three.
“I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because
I know how much loss he has suffered,” she said to Oprah. “But I knew that if I didn’t say it, then I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”
Then earlier this month, she explained further about her experience when she told CBS interviewer Jane Pauley, “When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey, certainly part of mine, is being able to be really open about it. And I haven’t really scraped the surface on my experience, but I do think that I would never want someone else to feel that way, and I would never want someone else to be making those sorts of plans, and I would never want someone else to not be believed.”
Harry has told his story in his biography, Spare, which led to continuing strained relations with the other royals, including King Charles, Prince William and his wife Kate, when it was published in January 2023. But Meghan has yet to put her feelings onto paper.
Royal author Tom Quinn recently said that it’s a matter of when, not if, when it comes to a Meghan biography. “Meghan knows that a personal memoir of her time in the UK as a working royal would sell millions of copies and make her the sort of money she craves. All this fills Charles, William and Kate with horror.”
Meanwhile, Harry has also said that he has enough material for a second volume of Spare. The source reveals that Harry and Meghan are waiting to wreak their revenge and hit back amid the continuing family feud.
“Another tell-all would cause so much trouble; this feud would go nuclear. No doubt the time will come down the line that they publicly address all of this,” the insider claims. “They’re both being very cautious about it all right now, but eventually Meghan is going to want to write her memoir, Harry is going to want to update Spare, and they are going to want to sit down and promote themselves on TV.
“They will not shy away from answering questions about the royals. For now, they’re biding their time.”
