The 79-year-old baking pro said she would like her children to euthanise her if she had 'lost her marbles' or became too ill to look after herself.

Mary is the latest in a string of celebrities who have spoken out about the assisted dying debate, and it seems she is all for the idea.

In the U.K. currently, anyone helping a family member die would be considered a criminal, meaning they're liable to do jail time.

'I would love my children to be able to give me a pill, although of course I do understand that could be abused'

'I certainly don't want to be a burden,' said Mary. 'I would love my children to be able to give me a pill, although of course I do understand that could be abused.'

Her comments come as she approaches her 80th birthday, although the star could be looking at 20 more years if she follows in her mother's footsteps, who died at the grand old age of 105.

However Allistair Thompson, from Care Not Killing, has spoken about his disappointment in Mary's comments.

'This is deeply depressing' he said. 'It is clear that her reasons for backing euthanasia relate to her fear of becoming a burden. It is this reason that means we should never change the law.'

TV hosts Richard and Judy have previously spoken about their agreement to kill one another if they fell seriously ill, and Katie Hopkins has always got behind the cause.

Mary is married and has two children, with her third child, William, tragically dying in a car crash in 1989, aged just 19.
