CBB star Katie, 40, took to Twitter to accuse people suffering with the disorder of making it a fashion statement.
She wrote: "People with depression do not need a doctor and a bottle of something that rattles. They need a pair of running shoes and fresh air.
"UK has seen a 500% growth in anti-depressants since 1991. Like being bullied, being depressed is a fashionable thing to be.
"There is no stigma around depression. There are only realists and people p*ssed off because their train is delayed."
Taking a swipe at those suffering with another disorder, Katie added: "As with ADHD – it is an unnecessary medical solution to a social problem."
But former TOWIE star Maria was one of many unimpressed with Katie's comments.
Maria hit back: "You can't seriously be that thick to believe what you are tweeting right now. Try living with depression. See how you cope.
"There is plenty of stigma/depression. How can you discuss something you know nothing about. Your so out of touch it's painful [sic]."
Maria then posted some statistics showing the correlation between anti-depressants being prescribed and suicide rates falling.
She added: "Imagine growing up with such a narrow minded cynical old battle axe as a mother. I really hope Katie Grotkins kids never suffer w/depression."
