A fake Facebook account named ‘RIP Macauley’ received thousands of ‘likes’ before it was removed from the social networking site.

The page read: “At about 11 a.m. ET on Thursday (November 06, 2014), our beloved actor Macaulay Culkin passed away.

"Macaulay Culkin was born on August 26, 1980 in New York. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.”

A friend of the star soon corrected reports, telling fans that he was ‘alive and well’ and he had ‘just seen’ the child star.

Macaulay had also shared photos with his band Pizza Underground on Friday.

The star tweeted a selfie via the band's Twitter account, writing: "We're on tour you silly people."
