One of those celebs who is refusing to stand for it any longer is Lizzie Cundy, who has taken to Twitter to vow that she's planning to do something in the fight against cyberbullying.

She wrote: "I’m going to do a campaign against the online trolls on twitter. It’s done way too much, way too easily. Those that do it need to be stopped."

Lizzie, who is no stranger to just how vicious online trolls can become, was flooded with support from her Twitter fans, who wrote messages of encouragement in response to the tweet.

One wrote: "Well said Lizzie. they are not very nice one bit, I can not stand online trolls," as another commented: "If anyone can do it, you can!" and another wrote: "Good on you Lizzie, there’s no room for trolls on social media, time for them to be removed."

We spoke to Lizzie about what inspired her to stand up, and she told us: "Since my ITV show Our Shirley Valentine Summer, I have had the most amazing incredible response from so many, I’ve been overwhelmed with people’s kindness - especially on social media.

"But there was one tweet - from a former friend - that was so horrid and disturbing targeting me. It brought me to actual tears. A close friend texted me what had been written. It not only shocked but it really saddened me.

"Whether it was out of bitterness, jealousy or just sheer nastiness, there was no need for it. It’s hurtful and it’s damaging. My boys saw it and it upset them. I have a thick skin as you have to have, especially in the TV world, but this is just unacceptable that people are allowed to write this sort of stuff on a public platform and get away with it.

"I have had a horrific time with a stalker also that tries to get hold of me on Twitter and when I report him, he just goes and sets up in another name."

Sophie Gradon

The recent devastating death of Love Island star Sophie Gradon also had an impact on Lizzie, who continued: "I also spoke with friends of Sophie who tragically took her own life this year and they said she'd had to deal with the online trolls.

"I just felt strongly that I need to do something before this goes any further as lives are being destroyed by online trolls on Twitter and Twitter are allowing this abuse to happen. I’ve had such a great response from many well-known celebs sending their thanks and that they'll support this campaign. Enough is enough and the trolls need to be stopped."

This comes hot on the heels of Katie Price's campaign to make online trolling illegal after years of her son Harvey being attacked by vile comments. Her petition gained enough signatures to be discussed in Parliament, and Katie said: "Trolling is a major problem in this day and age.

"People of all ages and background suffer every day, including my family - especially my son Harvey. I have tried my best to expose people and even had two arrested but nothing was done and there were no repercussions or penalties for this behaviour."
