Leslie Grantham played villainous Dirty Den in EastEnders, but the seriously ill star is a convicted murderer in real life

Former EastEnders star Leslie, 71, is currently "fighting for his life" while suffering with a serious illness, but internet trolls are showing no sympathy due to his murder conviction in 1966.

Leslie Grantham

The actor enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers regiment of the army when he was 18. While serving in West Germany, he had a struggle with a taxi driver which ended with Leslie shooting the driver dead.

He told the police that he did not know the gun was loaded, but he was later convicted of murder and served 10 years in prison.

Shocking stuff, right?

Trolls are now taking to social media in a backlash against Leslie's controversial past, wishing him a “slow painful death”.

One Twitter user said: "If Leslie Grantham dies there no doubt there will be loads of RIP’s and sympathy 🙄🙄 would rather save the RIP’s for the taxi driver he stabbed to death tbh."

Another succinctly expressed: "Save your sympathy for the taxi driver he murdered #LeslieGrantham"

Leslie joined EastEnders as 'Dirty' Den Watts in 1985 and played opposite screen wife Anita Dobson for four years until he was shot dead. Den then rose from the ashes when he returned to the show in 2003 to reunite with adopted daughter Sharon Watts.

A spokesperson told Closer: "Leslie Grantham remains poorly and is being taken care of by medical staff. No further comment other than to request that you respect the privacy of Leslie’s family and friends."
