'I asked myself, “Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?"'

The 28 year-old singer told a US magazine how her heartache inspired one of the songs from her new album.

‘By the Grace of God’ begins with Katy lying on the floor of a bathroom, fighting suicidal thoughts.

‘That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point,’ she said.

‘All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs,’ said Katy.

Another of Katy’s songs references how her ex-husband delivered the news he wanted a divorce by text.

Katy was the picture of happiness meeting fans at Good Morning America earlier this month

‘You sent a text/It's like the wind changed your mind,’ goes the line from ‘Ghost.’

But since splitting from Russell Brand in December 2011, Katy has once again found happiness with on-off boyfriend John Mayer.

She gushed about the singer in the same interview, saying: ‘He literally is a genius, as is evident from his songwriting.’

Meanwhile, Russell has told fans at his latest stand up show that is ‘currently single’ after ending his romance with Jemima Khan.

The news comes just two weeks after he was spotted arm in arm with millionaires Jemima in London.

He had also admitted to being 'presently beleaguered by a nerdish, whirling dervish, and am eschewing all others,’ in a piece for a UK newspaper.
