The 31-year-old gave birth to Belle in March 2014 and in a new interview she said they only surrounded her with gender-neutral colours in order to allow her to choose her own identity.

When given the scenario of being Queen for a day and asked what she’d do, Katie told Stylist: “Children’s toys wouldn’t just be blue and pink.

Katie and Richard choose to dress their daughter in gender-neutral outfits

“My little girl’s a bit of a tomboy. When my fiancé and I found out we were having a daughter, we wanted everything to be gender neutral and decorated her nursery with lots of primary colours and farm animals.”

Katie admitted she and Richard didn’t want it to seem like they were picking Belle’s identity for her.

She was forced to miss Belle's first birthday party because of complications with routine surgery

She continued: “We thought that if we have her everything pink it would be like saying, ‘This is you, we’re choosing your identity and how you express yourself’.”

Katie – who suffered a brutal acid attack in 2008, leaving her with serious burns and long-lasting injuries – recently shared her disappointment at missing Belle’s first birthday party.

After suffering complications from a routine surgery procedure, Katie tweeted “Thanks for all the birthday messages for Belle! Unfortunately I’m in hospital but her dad tells me she’s had a lovely party x.”
