Katie Hopkins, the rent-a-gob renowned for her controversial comments about parenting, weight and everything else ever, headed out to enjoy the “working class” fun of bingo in Exeter yesterday.
Yup, Katie was genuinely at the Mecca Bingo Hall in North Street, Exeter joining in the regular community afternoon bingo session.
But before she headed along, she made it very clear on Twitter that she was NOT looking forward to the experience.
An attempt by Conservative party chairman Grant Shapps to celebrate the cuts in tax on beer and bingo to help “hardworking people do more of the things they enjoy” sparked a backlash.
And writing in her column for Yahoo, Katie implied that this bingo tax cut was what had convinced her to try her hand at the popular pastime: "In his budget George Osborne told us we should be enjoying more of the finer things in life – like beer and bingo.
"I decided he might be on to something, and trotted off to Mecca Bingo to find out what all the fuss was about."
However, despite comparing the "loyal customers" of the Mecca Bingo halls to the "faithful making their daily pilgrimage" at church, Katie did not seem too impressed by what she found there.
"If any child of mine ever suggests Mecca Bingo for Mothering Sunday I will write them out of the will.
"I don’t understand the young people wasting away their lives in this place. The two young women that shared the same bleach on their hair must be missing something if they think this is a good way to spend a day; work or brains or both."
Despite this - and despite hating the food on offer - Katie begrudgingly admitted that she was "converted" into a Bingo fan.
" If I was old and alone, maybe I would come to Mecca Bingo; for the warmth, the company and to keep the grey matter moving."
