Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced the South African athlete to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

She also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

It is a decision that has been widely criticised by many, sparking the hashtag #thingslongerthanoscarssentence.

And now 39-year-old Katie Hopkins, 39, while speaking passionately about the 888,246 ceramic poppies which have been installed at the Tower of London to represent all British and colonial fatalities from the First World War, has also lashed out at the verdict.

Defending her right to be 'British first', she said in her column: "I defend my right to be inward looking. We all work hard to protect our families, provide for our children and ensure we pay our way.

"If I look outwards all I see are a bunch of scruffy idiots trying to get across the Channel to take our taxes, and another bunch of bearded fools hanging women for a crime they didn’t commit."

She added, referring to Paralympian athlete Pistorius: "If I look far enough I see a man, with no legs, gun down a beautiful woman and be found not guilty of murder.

"I stand up for my right to be British first, everything else second."

She is not the only celebrity to slam Oscar's verdict; acid attack victim Katie Piper also tweeted to her 277,000 followers: "Disappointing!

"Reeva family must be shocked, gutted and crushed all over again #nojusticeforReeva"

She added furiously: "[He] will probably be out in half that.

"If somebody shot a member of my family dead and they died terrified in pain I wouldn't feel 5 years is justice."

KATIE PIPER SLAMS OSCAR PISTORIUS SENTENCE: 'NO JUSTICE FOR REEVA'

Oscar Pistorius must serve a minimum of one sixth of his sentence. After that he may be allowed out of prison and serve the remainder under house arrest.

His legal team think that means they could have him home after just 10 months in prison.

However, the South African state prosecutor says it is more likely Pistorius will serve a third of his sentence in prison. That would be something around 15 months behind bars.

Reeva's mother June, when asked about the prospect of Pistorius being out of prison in a year, insisted the length of his sentence 'doesn't matter'.

She said: "It doesn't matter, he's going to pay something."
