Katie Hopkins is famed for having a sharp tongue, and has been, on more than one occasion, dubbed the ‘most hated woman in Britain’, opened up her heart when she learned of the death of Jessica Lawson.

The 12-year-old was on a school trip to France when she fell into a lake near Meymac in the Massif Central region.

Jessica became trapped under an overturned pontoon, and, despite the fact a lifeguard managed to pull her free, could not be revived.

She was taken to hospital in Limoges after the incident but died on Wednesday, shortly before her family arrived to see her.

Writing on Facebook, Jessica's father Antony said: "This only happens to other people! Yesterday we became those 'other people' we lost our beautiful loving and kind daughter Jessica in tragic circumstances in France."

Her family have since travelled to France to bring the little girl’s body home.

Now, writing in her column for The Sun, Katie has penned an emotional open letter to Jessica’s mother.

She said: “Giving birth is the day you understand the meaning of fear…

“A mother must never lose a child before she dies, lest the natural order of life be disrupted.”

Speaking from the heart, Katie added: “I’m not sure there are answers for you in France. But there must be comfort in the closeness.

"Being among her things, smelling the familiarity, hearing her laughing before the quiet closes in.

"And I just wanted to let you know, as a mum myself, that I am so sorry you have lost your baby.”

After reading the column, many readers took to Twitter to thank Katie for writing such a beautiful and moving tribute to Jessica.

One wrote: “Katie you made me sob, that is perfectly written. My baby is 20 tomorrow, not a day since I haven't had that fear.”

Another added: "This article is beautifully written, sat in my car in tears, absolutely the biggest fear of any parent.”

Our thoughts are with Jessica Lawson’s family at this tragic time.
