Katie Hopkins has divided opinion amongst her Twitter followers by saying that being a full-time mother is not a job.

The radio host made the controversial comments during her Saturday morning show on LBC.

She said that mums should not try to claim 50 per cent or more of a couple's belongings or finances when settling a divorce if they remained at home with the children.

The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate said: “Where does fair sit on a divorce? Is 50/50 fair? Are you like another lady who said that 'you want your children to visit their dad's a nice flat, so you don't want to take it all'?

"Or are you like Daniel who's doing everything and therefore afterwards he would expect to still things be split 50/50 because he seems like such a nice guy?

"Or do you feel like, actually women are having a bit of a laugh? That it is not a job, it is not a job to stay at home and look after children.

"I cannot stand people on Facebook, I'm not on Facebook, but who put 'full-time-mummy'. Big news! 'Full-time-mummy' is not a job.”

The ex Apprentice contestant added that, in her opinion, someone who calls themselves a “full-time mummy” is just using it to cover up the fact they’re employed.

Many of the broadcaster’s Twitter followers were unimpressed and they were quick to hit out on the social media site.

One person wrote: “Not full time paid employment but a very important job to do none the less! Lets not undermine anyone who is a Mum,hard enough as it is!”

Another responded: “Best job in the world. Payed with pure love. When they all go to school. I'll work, but till then I'm there for a hug 24/7 and that suits us.”

Someone else replied: “I'd rather work for my children than work for a soul destroying company while some other person brings my child up!”

However, some people agreed, with one writing: “100% agree with Katie here. Being a full time mum, isn't a job. And as a mother myself, raising kids isn't a job, more a privilege”

Another wrote: “Nothing wrong with nurserys etc, it's good for kids to be around other children & not stuck at home all day.”
