Mother-of-three Kate Winslet has been targeted in an advertising campaign by parents' rights group Fathers4Justice, who have attacked the actress for saying she protects her children by making sure they live with her.
And now she is threatening them with legal action.
The Titanic star is pictured on a black and white poster with the caption: "Kate, every child deserves a father this Christmas."
The row stems from an October interview that Kate did with Vogue, in which she is quoted as saying that her children live with her full-time:
"People go, ‘Oh, my God! Those poor children! They must have gone through so much.’ Says who?"
"They’ve always been with me. They don’t go from pillar to post; they’re not flown here and there with nannies. That’s never happened.
"My kids don’t go back and forth; none of this 50/50 time with the mums and dads – my children live with me; that is it. That is it!"
On the Fathers4Justice poster, the charity challenges Kate's opinion, saying: "We disagree. This year nearly 4 million children will wake up without a father this Christmas, often as a result of outdated and prejudiced views which treat a nation of first-class fathers as second-rate parents.
"We hope that Kate and her son never experience the profound pain and loss of being separated from their loved ones."
Kate's solicitors have reportedly issued Fathers4Justice with a legal letter claiming that an advert the group were about to publish regarding comments the actress made in Vogue magazine about 50/50 parenting was "misleading and seriously defamatory".
"Whilst I fully support fathers’ rights, I can happily state this has never been a concern for me or my son"
And she is fully backed by ex-husband Sam Mendes, father to her nine-year-old son Joe, who leapt to Kate's defence with the following statement:
“It is inappropriate for this organisation to involve my family and I when they know nothing of our personal circumstances.
"Whilst I fully support fathers’ rights, I can happily state this has never been a concern for me or my son.”
However Nadine O'Connor, the Campaign Director of Fathers4Justice, has defended the group's actions, saying: "We believe the content of the advert is accurate, balanced and reflective of the comments she made.
"We do though welcome Mr Mendes comments supporting fathers' rights and find it regrettable that instead of resolving this dispute as we had agreed, Kate Winslet has sought redress through legal action.
"What we have referred to in the advert is a direct quote from Ms Winslet herself, a statement she put in the public domain through a lengthy self promotional interview in Octobers Vogue magazine.
“We are running this advert as part of a campaign to highlight the sensitive issue of four million children waking up on Christmas Day without their father.
"It is clear from what Kate says that she does not support ‘shared parenting’.”
