Middleton put her arms around trembling Leigh Smith, 33, whose baby daughter, Beatrice, passed away at East Anglia Children’s Hospice - of which Kate is royal patron.

Mrs Smith told the audience at the fundraising event of her horror when her newborn was rushed to hospital with a heart problem.

‘It became clear that Beatrice was dying and would be unlikely to survive long enough or be strong enough for a heart transplant. We knew out little girl was just too tired,’ she told a captivated crowd.

In the weeks after her child’s tragic death, Mrs Smith reached out to Kate via letter to praise the staff at the hospice. And she received a personal reply from the Duchess.

‘It was a lovely gesture and helped me through a terrible time,’ said Leigh, who was touched by Kate's kindness.

‘When I met her today she remember the letter and said it was an honour to meet me.'
