With the Rio Olympic Games fast approaching, Jessica Ennis-Hill has teamed up with P&G for their #ThankYouMum campaign, revealing that her mum Alison Powell played a big role in her success as an Olympic gold medallist.

The British track and field athlete opened up at The Savoy Hotel this week, speaking to Gabby Logan about how her mum inspired her to never give up on her dreams, despite many setbacks and mental challenges Jessica faced.

“There have been lots of times in training when you feel ‘I don’t know if I can do this anymore’,” Jessica admitted.

“You’re really fatigued physically and mentally, preparing for an Olympic Games is a really stressful thing and you think to yourself ‘Can I do this?’ or ‘Do I want to do this?’

“My mum always just says ‘You can do it, it is going to be hard but if you have a hard journey to something, that’s not plain sailing, then the end point is always that much sweeter when you are successful.”

Between the London 2012 Olympic Games - where she won her first Olympic gold medal – and this year’s Rio Olympic Games, Jessica has become a mum herself for the first time.

Reggie, who’s almost two years old, has also helped Jessica to realise the support and strength her mother gave her to achieve all that she has done to this day.

“I really don’t believe I would have been able to achieve any of my World, Olympic or European medals without the support and strength of my mum throughout my life,” she explained.

“That’s even truer now as I’m juggling the very different but equally important challenges of being a mum myself to an energetic toddler and my full-on preparations for Rio 2016.

"She is the most amazing Grandma and plays a key role in helping to look after Reggie when I am training and Andy [Hill – Jessica’s husband] is working.”

P&G’s campaign video, aptly named ‘Strong’, tells the story of how mums play a vital role in their kids’ lives.

On the video, Jessica said: “It was like I was watching my own story.

“The strength my mum shows has always been my inspiration. P&G always recognises the role our mums play and that’s why I’m so proud to represent both P&G and some of their well-loved brands, Pampers®, Olay® and Venus® at the Olympic Games.”

P&G’s campaign was inspired by the research their brands do to help create products that work better for mums and families.
