Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was sacked from the BBC yesterday, just over a week after he was suspended from the broadcasting house over claims that he punched a producer.
North Yorkshire Police have reportedly asked the BBC for a report on what happened in the incident between Clarkson and his producer.
A spokeswoman told The Mirror: “The information will be assessed appropriately and action will be taken where necessary.”
A senior Met Office Police chief has now claimed that Clarkson could face common assault charges, which carry a maximum sentence of up to 6 years in prison.
BBC Director-General Tony Hall said following the sacking: “A member of staff, who is a completely innocent party, took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature.
“A line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.
"It is not a decision I have taken lightly.
“Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened on this occasion.
"I know how popular the programme is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion.”
It is thought that the sacking could cost the BBC millions in revenue.
