Messages between the actor and blonde teenager Lucy Clode were revealed earlier this week.
They showed James asking the 17-year-old to meet up in a hotel with him after the actor had asked her if she had a boyfriend and if she was 18.
Lucy met James after a performance of his play Of Mice And Men in New York and after taking a photo with the actor, James asked her to ‘tag’ him in it.
Appearing on US chat show Live With Kelly And Michael, the actor admitted he felt a bit ashamed by the incident.
‘I'm embarrassed and I guess I'm just a model of how social media is tricky.’
‘It's the way that people meet each other today, but what I've learned- I guess because I'm new to it- is you don't know who's on the other end,' he said.
He spoke about the uncertainties of meeting people on social networking sites like Instagram.
‘You get a feel for them, you don't know who you're talking to…. I used bad judgement and I learned my lesson,’ he revealed.
‘Unfortunately in my position, not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world so it's doubly embarrassing.’
