The debate focused on whether accusations of sexual harassment have gone 'too far'

Since allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein came to light in October, many stars have decided to open up about their own experiences with powerful men in the industry.

As more and more women have come forward, men have also shared their stories. Soon afterwards, the #metoo hashtag began trending on Twitter, with millions of women across the world sharing their experience of sexual harassment.

While the Twitter movement has been praised by many lifting the lid on how frequently women (and men) deal with sexual harassment, others have slammed that the hashtag.

On today’s This Morning debate, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were discussing whether or not the hashtag and accusations have gone ‘too far’ alongside actress Debbie Arnold (who last week accused Michael Winner of harassment while she auditioned), and LBC radio presenter Nick Ferrari.https://closeronline.co.uk/celebrity/news/phillip-schofield-this-morning-dancing-ice/

However, following the heated debate fans were quick to slam Phillip’s questions and praise Holly for her response to the discussion.

Nick started by saying: “My concern is the good that’s been done with the hashtag #metoo campaign,” before explaining that an MP, Mark Garnier, should not be accused of sexual harassment for asking his aide to buy him a sex toy.

Holly jumped in to ask who gets to decide what is or isn’t harassment, saying: “Where is the level then? You can’t say if it’s rape, you’re allowed to say it. Where does it stop?”

Nick continued: “There’s inappropriate behaviour which is ‘go and by sex toys,’ and then there is trying to sidle up or touching hands or trying to move it to a sexual position. There are two different trains here.”

Actress Debbie then intervened, saying: “But inappropriate behaviour sometimes goes on to the next thing so when people speak out about what’s happened to them, even though it may seem trivial, it’s stopping people in their tracks before it goes any further. It’s a circle.”

Phillip then asked why the women using the hashtag were naming and shaming on Twitter, rather than going to the police.

Debbie responded: “Because it’s hard to stand alone. We are opening old wounds here so to get ourselves out there, it’s so hard to stand alone. To go to the police and say something has happened.”

It was here that Holly responded: “Even with Weinstein, some did go to the police thirty years ago and nothing was done. It does take extra measures. Doesn’t it just go to show the extent of the relief on women? The outpouring, because suddenly they are being heard, and they are being listened to, that shows how deep and dark it’s got.”

Phillip then went on to say that some women have gone on to say that if their husbands hadn't persisted then they wouldn't be in a successful marriage years later, continuing: "Does it rub all of that out? Any guy would be terrified that what he is doing is inappropriate."

Holly stepped in saying: "No one is saying that, we can't enlighten it to that because it will stop women from coming forward again."

Viewers slammed Nick and Phillip’s comments, and supported Holly.

“Holly is the only person talking [sic] sence today,” one wrote.

“This conversation about sexual assault/harassment is so tiring. Holly looks so tired,” said another.

“The #metoo campaign will give so many who have been affected the voice to speak out against power driven monster," one said.

Another continued: “Totally triviallised the subject and discussed by two ignorant men who’ve no idea the daily sexual harassment women deal with.”

Some even went so far as to blast Phillip’s question, writing: “Phil is such an idiot conflating predatory sexual advances w/flirting. FFS, I don’t know how Holly copes w/ that numpty.”

Another wrote: “Phil you’re coming out with some absolutely ridiculous comments today.”
