Now plus-size women are hitting back and have launched the #Curvee campaign – backed by TOWIE star Gemma Collins.
Gemma, 34, owns a successful clothing line for curvy women, and recently collaborated with high street giant Evans.
Earlier this week, Gemma posted a collage of larger ladies, including herself, and has insisted these women deserve the right to feel good about themselves.
She told Closer Online: "Supporting the #curvee movement was something I am happy to do. They ban the hashtag #curvy but you can still search so many offensive terms on Instagram.
"Also #skinny has anorexic and pornographic pictures and it's not banned? I don’t get their logic."
Despite receiving some negative comments for her post on Instagram, Gemma isn't backing down and is determined to stand up for the rights of plus-size women.
She continued: "All women are beautiful – end of. Yes, some girls have different shapes but that doesn’t matter. We have to stop thinking beauty is a set ‘look’, size or the things we see in magazines – that’s not real. That’s not real beauty."
Gemma insists she launched her clothing line to make women like her feel good – and she's proud that they can look fashionable and still feel comfortable in her designs.
But, while celebrities like Gemma are taking a stand against the ban, some users still feel the need to post negative comments.
"I posted on Instagram and some of the comments on the picture were really hurtful and vicious," she said. "These women are inspirational and to have keyboard warriors brand them ‘disgusting’ or call them names is sickening.
"All curvy girls deserve to have confidence and feel good about themselves. What weight these women are is not a factor."
