It was only recently that Nadiya was proposed to on Loose Women. But while promoting her new cookbook she's managed to upset a few Bangladeshi people in her interview with The Guardian.
In the interview Nadiya discusses how there was no cheese, desserts or chairs in Bangladesh, saying: “Growing up in Luton, we’d always eat on a cloth placed on the floor of the living room, with no TV allowed.
“There were no chairs back in Bangladesh and Dad wanted to keep the tradition, so we never owned a dining table.”
She then went onto say: “The concept of dessert doesn’t exist in Bangladeshi cuisine and so the only time we had it was at school.”
And on the topic of cheese, The Great British Bake Off winner said: “My mother never bought any because there was none in Bangladeshi cuisine.
“I was introduced to it - and grapes and crackers - at school and it was very painful because then I’d crave cheese every night at home.”
However the TV baker has received some backlash from people who don’t appreciate her generalizing the Bangladesh culture.
On the Guardian’s Facebook post there are many comments hitting back at what Nadiya said in the interview.
One user wrote: “There’s definitely chairs in Bangladesh, as well as desserts and our local cheese which we call poneer. This woman is definitely no Bangladeshi role model and doesn’t know what the hell she’s talking about.”
Another wrote: “Her statements are very generalized…”
Someone else who didn’t approve of her comments wrote: “Shame on you Nadiya. Before talking about Bangladesh you should do a little research about it’s cuisine…”
However some Facebook users did praise Nadiya’s love for cheese. One commenter wrote: “This woman is absolutely gorgeous and I can relate to the obsession with cheese”.
Another wrote: “Love this lady - and can relate to her love of cheese”.
