The former X Factor judge, 43, revealed that his song Let Me Go is about his and his wife Dawn’s daughter Poppy, who was stillborn in 2012.
When asked by James if the song was about Poppy, Gary replied: “It keeps a life and a flame in the whole thing. It’s not my voice, it’s someone else’s.
“I don’t like there to be things that are unsaid really, and from that thing happening to my dad’s passing, there’s a lot of them in this record with me.”
Gary insisted that Let Me Go should be a celebration, and that it keeps the memory alive for him.
He refused to comment further on the subject, saying: “There’s a point where I’ll stop out of respect to my wife.”
During the documentary, Gary also speaks about some of his career lows. He admitted that after his second album flopped in 1999, he thought ‘everyone was laughing at him.’
He said: “I don’t want to dwell on too much like, ‘feel sorry for me’, but it was s***. It’s s*** to be you. You don’t want to be that person. You want to be the one laughing about the person the joke’s about.
“That was the worst bit of the whole thing. It wasn’t losing the record deal, and it wasn’t not singing for seven years. It was feeling like a d*** every time I turned on a radio show or something, it was feeling like everyone’s laughing at you.”
