It's been a long time since Geri Horner released any new music.
But now the former Spice Girl (we still think of her as Ginger Spice and always will) is gearing up for 23rd June when her first single for 12 years will go on sale. And there's a very poignant story behind why she's getting back into the music business.
Geri explained to The Sun that it was after the death of good friend George Michael that she decided to channel her grief into writing, and the song Angels in Chains is the result of that process.
Heavily pregnant with her son Monty when she heard of George's passing, she was understandably full of emotion. She recalled: 'He had such an impact on my life. I didn’t know what to do with all my feelings. When we have grief, you have to share it with each other. It was like a gift, it pushed me out the door.'
An in an interview broadcast on ITV's Lorraine show today she also admitted to being nervous about how the single will be received: 'I didn’t know what to do because George wasn’t my immediate family. I was a fan and I was a friend. It was a unique relationship and so I just wrote a song. I wrote these lyrics down and a bit of melody and submitted it to the record company and they went, ‘we want to release that’. I was so scared for so many reasons, particularly because it’s vulnerable and it’s about George and what would people think?”
And it seems Geri was inspired by George in more ways than one. In a move much like the Faith hitmaker, Geri is donating all of the proceeds from the sale of Angels in Chains to Childline, one of his favourite charities.
Well, we certainly can't wait to hear it.
