Michelle Hardwick, who plays vet Vanessa Woodfield on the ITV soap, came out as homosexual in 2013.

At the time, she told The Mirror: “Since joining Emmerdale I’ve been getting asked about my personal life and when people want to know ‘do you have a boyfriend?’ It’s tricky.

“I don’t want to hide anything. I’ve never actually been able to talk about ‘my girlfriend’ or ‘partner’ – this person that means everything to me, and it feels good to be able to finally do it.”

Now, sitting down with Lorraine Kelly, Michelle has spoken about coming out to her family, proposing to girlfriend Rosie Nicholl, and their beautiful wedding ceremony.

Explaining how she popped the question, Michelle said: “I had a suspicion she would say yes. I hoped!

“I put all petals down, I got on one knee, we had James Taylor her favourite song playing in the background.”

Unsurprisingly, she got a big yes!

The couple tied the knot earlier this year at Danby Castle in North Yorkshire - and, judging by the photos they shared on Twitter, it was a truly beautiful day.

And a lot of that was down to the fact that both she and Rosie had all their loved ones around them as they tied the knot.

She said: “We’re just two normal people, who love each other, we’ve just fallen in love, whether that’s a man, woman.”

“And that day to have everybody in that room, that means so much to us and for us to say our vows in front of them - that’s beautiful.”

When Lorraine asked how and when Michelle came out to her family, the actress said: “I was in my late twenties, it was my dad first of all, he sort of asked me really and I just thought it’s now or never, it’s just me and my dad.

“And he’s absolutely amazing. He just said, ‘I’ll tell the family, just leave it and everything will be fine’.

“He was more upset that I had not been able to tell him earlier and that I had been carrying that.”

Lorraine is on ITV, weekdays from 8.30am to 9.25am
