The 30-year-old actress, who plays Rachel Breckle in the ITV soap, was left stunned when aspiring actor Andy Barnes dumped her.
According to reports, he had struggled to cope with her fame and life in the limelight.
A source told the Mirror: "Gemma really thought Andy was for keeps. He was being very intense and had been with her at her family home.
"Then last Monday he turned round out of the blue and ended it. It was a bit of a shock to say the least.
"But Gemma is a strong woman, she has been through a lot and won't let this get her down. It is especially difficult for her as her Grandad passed away recently.”
The pair began dating five months ago, after Andy started chatting up Gemma Oaten on a train.
Apparently he was left red-faced when he boasted to the actress that he’d been in three episodes of Emmerdale - not realising she’d been one of the show’s mains stars for the past three years.
Gemma hinted at her love split on Twitter last week, when she wrote: “I'm ever learning.
“This is what I'm learning. Always always be you and I'll be me and we'll be just great.”
Underneath, she added a quote picture which read: “If it’s meant for you, you won’t have to beg for it.
“You will never have to sacrifice your dignity for your destiny.”
Speaking about her relationship during a recent interview, Gemma said: "I would love nothing more than to have kids. I am very maternal. But not just yet, I’ve been playing a lot of catch-up.
"I’ve just met a wonderful man - it’s my time at the minute and our time. My sister had her third kid at 38 so I know there is lots of time.”
