Elizabeth Hurley, who is a longtime supporter of beauty company Estee Lauder's Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, is in New York City to attend a fundraising event for research into the disease.
And, to help promote breast cancer awareness, the model / actress posted a 'mammogram selfie' to Twitter, highlighting the importance of regular check-ups by going for a scan.
She captioned the picture of herself, which saw her sitting in a clinic, dressed in a robe and surrounded by medical equipment, as: "After 40 you should have an annual mammogram.
"Had mine this morning. It's always nerve wracking but remember...
"Breast cancer is 95 per cent curable if detected early."
Getting a high-quality screening mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early.
You should also be checking your own breasts on a regular basis.
The NHS Breast Screening Programme has produced a five-point plan for being breast aware:
-
know what’s normal for you
-
look at your breasts and feel them
-
know what changes to look for
-
report any changes without delay
-
attend routine screening if you’re 50 or over
Look at your breasts and feel each breast and armpit. You may find it easiest to do this in the shower or bath, by running a soapy hand over each breast and up under each armpit. You can look at your breasts in the mirror. Moving your arms around will allow you to see your breasts from every angle.
If you find changes in your breast that aren’t normal for you, it’s best to see your GP as soon as possible. This is because the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of successful treatment.
