Shona, who has been on the soap since 2008, is now planning to release her debut single this summer after nearly three years of secret recording, according to The Sun.

A source said: “Despite becoming one of the most popular stars in EastEnders, she has always longed to be known for her music too.

“It’s scary showing the public another side of her, and she knows there’ll be a lot of pressure.”

The 24 year old actress trained in musical theatre, and has apparently been writing and recording songs with Swedish singer Axel Jansson, and they plan to release one of their duets through Warner Music Group.

“Axel has really inspired her to try. She loves the music they’ve been making together and is now ready for everyone to hear it,” the source added.

Shona is hoping that Axel – who will be appearing as a busker in an upcoming episode of the BBC soap - will help her to be taken seriously in the music industry.

Shona previously sang A Change Is Gonna Come for Children in Need 2012 and proved then that she was a great singer.

In the past, several residents of Albert Square have tried their hand at a music career too, but only ever successfully released one or two songs.

Shane Richie (Alfie Moon) reached number two in 2003 with his Children in Need single and cover version of I’m Your Man, and Martine McCutcheon (Tiffany Mitchell) had a number one hit in 1999 with Perfect Moment.

And who remembers this?

But what does this mean for Whitney Dean in EastEnders?

“It’s unclear whether this means she’ll be leaving Whitney behind to pursue singing full-time but it would definitely be tricky trying to juggle both,” the source said.

UPDATE: A BBC rep has told Reveal: "Shona has made no secret of her passion for music but EastEnders is her absolute priority.

"She hasn't recorded a single, and this not going to affect her job in any way. She is very much focused on her future at EastEnders."

Do you think Shona could make it in the music industry?
