In what has to be the strangest showbiz story of the day, David Hasselhoff is apparently no more.

Sob.

Yup, fans of the Baywatch star can no longer 'hassel' the Hoff - because he's only gone and changed his last name.

The actor claims he has legally altered his name to David Hoff and has shown off what appears to be a certificate of the change in a new video posted on YouTube.com.

"I've been wanting to drop the 'Hassel' from my life for years," he explains in the clip.

"Now I have made it official."

Check it out:

We just… we just can’t accept that this is true.

Taking to Twitter to share the link with fans, the 63-year-old hinted that he had disliked all of the jokes about his name for years.

He said: "Big news today and a massive relief for me.

“I hope everyone can understand... it feels great!"

A representative for Hasselhoff has yet to confirm if the name change is legal.

It’s not April Fool’s Day or anything, but we can’t help thinking that this has GOT to be some kind of joke. Or a clever viral trick, maybe?
