Sid Owen has offered support to his former EastEnders co-star Danniella Westbrook who recently announced she has cancer

Danniella Westbrook, 44, revealed over the weekend that she is getting a hysterectomy over the next few weeks after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Sid Owen, who played Ricky Butcher in EastEnders, has since contacted his former on-screen wife Danniella, who played Sam Mitchell, to show his support for the star.

According to the Mirror Online, Sid said: "I’m gobsmacked. Wish her well. She’s a strong girl and had to battle worse. My prayers are out for her and her family."

The pair have played the on/off love birds of Albert Square since 1990, and their characters married in 1991 (albeit for a short time).

In an interview with the same paper over the weekend, Danniella revealed that she has the same cancer as her good friend Jade Goody who died in 2009. The mum-of-two said: "After what happened with Jade I was frightened to talk to anyone about my cancer at first. She was my friend and what happened was so awful.

“There is part of me that thinks I would rather just be ill and not know about it – to just get on with life."

The actress has been open about her addiction to drugs and has admitted she first tried cocaine at the age of 14.After winning a part in EastEnders she became a regular on the London club scene and her drug use escalated, and by the age of 21 she was spending £400 a day on cocaine. In 2000 fans were shocked when pictures were published that showed Daniella's eroded nasal septum due to excessive drug use.Danniella checked into rehab and six months later appeared on television show The Priory when she claimed she had not used drugs in months. However, hosts Jamie Theakston and Zoe Ball struggled to get coherent answers from her as she was on drugs at the time despite her claims. She later said: "I said I was clean, but it was obvious I wasn't. I look about 50, and my voice was shaky. I should never have been allowed on. They wanted to laugh at me, rip me apart. I despise that sort of thing, but it did me the world of good because watching it I realised, 'I'm so ill.'"When it came to the crunch I thought, 'Hang on. I don't want to die.'"The star went back to rehab to try and beat her drug habit again and underwent reconstructive surgery on her nose.

“I want to live and sort out my health. I know I have to fight, I know I have to get up and battle it."

Feeling positive about her treatment, Dannielle concluded: “The doctors say they believe it is containable so I’m hopeful. My mum had the same cancer when I was 15. I’m 44 now and she is still here.

When Jade died, it prompted health ministers to review the NHS policy of not screening for cervical cancer until 25 in England.
