Danielle Lloyd has defended her plans to have a “designer baby” and select the sex of her next child.

The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate came under fire for announcing her plans to travel to Cyprus for the controversial process which is illegal in the UK.

The model is already a mother to four boys, with her youngest, Ronnie, being born just 16 weeks ago.

Danielle told Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s always been my dream to have a little girl. It’s about having that mix and bringing up a little girl. I know she might not be ‘girlie’ - she probably won’t be with four brothers - but it’s just about having a little mini-me almost.

“I could continue to have babies and hope I’d have a girl but I want to be realistic. I’ve got four boys at the moment and they are a handful.”

Gender selection, which costs around £15,000, is done by extracting the eggs from the mother while the father’s sperm is used to fertilise the eggs in a lab.

Specialists screen for the wanted gender and genetic diseases before the embryos are implanted in the mother’s womb.

Defending her decision, Danielle insists a lot of people go through with the procedure without making it known, and she claims to have received a lot of support online.

She said: “A lot of people are doing it but they keep it quiet, and that is what’s so frustrating for me.”

The Emma Barnett Show airs on BBC Radio 5 Live from 10am to 1pm on Monday to Thursday.
