We previously believed that Alison King would return to Coronation Street after a six-month sabbatical.

However the soap star has now confirmed that she has handed in her notice to ITV bosses.

And, more importantly, she has added that she intends to leave her role as Carla Connor permanently.

“It's not actually a break - I'm actually leaving," she told Metro.

"Because they're leaving the door open, I think people originally called it a break and people are asking 'When are you coming back?' and I'm like 'I'm not'.

"I'm looking forward to going back to doing different things and being versatile. I was meant to give myself four years at the most and I've done an amazing ten years, but it's knackering.

“I need to creatively be a few other people now and see my daughter a bit more."

Speaking in a separate interview with the Radio Times, Alison added: "I'm now going into my 10th year. So all Daisy (her daughter) has ever known is me getting out of the house at 7.30 in the morning and getting back when she's in bed.

"I've probably only ever done about 20 pick-ups or drop-offs in all the time she's been at school, which is quite sad."

Corrie bosses have vowed that, despite the fact that Alison intends to leave the soap for good, they will NOT kill Carla off.

A spokesperson said: "We wish Alison all the best with what she goes on to in the future. The door will be left open for a possible return for Carla.

"In the meantime, there is five months of fantastic drama before she bids farewell to Weatherfield."
