But it seems as if he is set to take some more time away, as he was caught up in an accident over the Easter break.
According to sources, the actor was playing with his young sons, Alfie and Harry, on a toy scooter.
The real-life Steve McDonald is said to have fallen from the scooter, injuring his shoulder so badly that he requires surgery.
A source told The Sun: “This is the last thing he wanted after such a long time away from work.
“He was looking forward to getting stuck into his storylines again.”
They continued: “He’s annoyed he needs surgery. But it’s a sore one and he’s going to rest up before heading back to work.
“Because it’s a shorter spell away it won’t give bosses such a big headache rewriting scenes.
“But it’s still bad luck.”
The actor will reportedly be away for two weeks.
During this time, he is set to undergo surgery on his shoulder, as well as take some time out to rest and recover.
A Corrie spokesperson told The Mirror: “Simon will hopefully be back within a fortnight."
The actor left the soap temporarily in September to battle health issues.
It was reported at the time that Simon had found Steve McDonald’s latest storyline particularly challenging as the character spiralled into depression.
“He put everything into it. It had a big impact on him because it helped to raise awareness of a condition which affects thousands of people,” a source told The Sun.
“He’s decided to take a bit of time out and has the support of everyone on the show.”
During his time off, he and his wife, Emma, welcomed a third baby boy together, who they named Teddy.
We imagine Simon has loved having his family around him - but we bet that he can’t wait to get back behind the bar at the Rovers Return.
Fingers crossed he feels better soon, eh?
