Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn has been rushed to hospital, where she is said to be fighting for her life.

The actress was taken ill on Thursday after her lung condition emphysema caused chest pains and fluid on her lungs.

And according to a close family friend, her condition is serious.

“She’s been in and out of hospital quite a few times in the last few years and normally the family are quite upbeat, but this time they seem more concerned," they told The Sun.

“She’s not in a good way and her loved ones are obviously very worried.”

Liz appeared on the popular soap as Vera Duckworth for 34 years, before illness caused her to quit the soap in 2008.

More recently, the actress has been restricted to using a wheelchair and has been left unable to leave the house for weeks.

Liz also underwent heart surgery in June, which meant she was unable to attend her grandson Thomas Borso and Alice Coughlin's wedding.

And in 2013, she had a heart pacer fitted after suffering a heart attack while on holiday in Spain.

The star first appeared on the soap back in 1974 and starred alongside her on-screen husband Jack, played by Bill Tarmey, for years.

We wish Liz a speedy recovery.
