We had high hopes that Alison King would return to Coronation Street after a six-month sabbatical.

However, the soap star has confirmed that she's handed in her notice to ITV bosses, and that she's leaving the ITV soap permanently.

“It's not a break - I'm actually leaving," she said.

"Because they're leaving the door open, I think people originally called it a break and people are asking 'When are you coming back?' and I'm like 'I'm not’,” she told The Metro.

The actress’s final scenes as Carla will air this week in a series of gruesome post-watershed scenes, as her wedding to Nick (Ben Price) will take centre stage.

Could the later timeslot have anything to do with the rumours that Nick will get violent with Carla after learning of her infidelity?

Teasing Nick's extreme reaction as a result of his brain injury, actor Ben Price told The Metro: "He gets stressed and stress brings it on.

"Then you have the merger of what Carla’s done – you know, sleeping with the chef and all the stuff with the Bistro.

"Nick’s going to get all that. Plus the brain injury – oh god, the poor guy’s going to be in a mess!"

He added: “The brain injury gives him that side that you can’t lock away.

“He’s always on the edge – a bit like the Hulk.”

While Alison has refused to reveal too many details about her departure, she has said WHY she decided to quit the cobbles after almost a decade on the soap.

Speaking with ! magazine{href='' }, she explained: “I had to leave, it’s been relentless.

“You find yourself going round in circles, both me and the character.”

Alison continued: “Carla is in everything, which is very flattering, but it never ends. You’re doing 15-hour days, plus two hours of learning new scripts once you get home.

“To do that for a decade can break you, so I would rather not be broken all the time for the rest of my life.

“I also think Carla has done everything she can do for now.”

Speaking in a separate interview with the Radio Times, Alison added that there is also someone very special in her life that inspired her career change.

That person?

It’s her beloved little girl, Daisy.

She said: "I'm now going into my 10th year. So all Daisy (her daughter) has ever known is me getting out of the house at 7.30 in the morning and getting back when she's in bed.

"I've probably only ever done about 20 pick-ups or drop-offs in all the time she's been at school, which is quite sad."
