While they are currently living over 3,000 miles apart and in different time zones, it’s clear that after nearly 15 years of marriage, Coleen and Wayne Rooney have entered the best chapter yet in their love story. In March, Coleen, 37, flew out from the family’s home in Cheshire to spend a romantic date weekend with husband Wayne, 37, who is currently managing US football club D.C United in Washington.

“Had the best time visiting @ waynerooney” Coleen posted alongside snaps of the pair looking happy and smitten.

Now, as Coleen and Wayne are set to celebrate their wedding anniversary on 12 June – 15 years on from their lavish Portofino nuptials – a source reveals to Closer that the couple would love to renew their vows this summer.

The insider says, “It’s something Wayne and Coleen have always discussed but the time hasn’t been quite right. There were times they never thought they would make it to 15 years – mainly because of Wayne’s womanising behaviour, with Coleen even wondering about divorce at some points.

“So they feel that 15 years is something special to commemorate and have talked about celebrating close to their house in Barbados this summer. It’s like a home from home and Coleen loves the idea of getting married on the beach surrounded by all their friends and family.”

Wayne’s documentary, Rooney, which aired last February, marked one of the first times the couple have talked in depth about their roller-coaster marriage.

After meeting when they were 12 years old, Coleen and Wayne played a huge part in the success and heartbreak of each other’s lives. Their highs include welcoming their four sons – Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five – as well as Wayne’s incredible football career and Coleen’s successful forays into fashion and the media, at one point becoming Closer’s weekly columnist.

But their marriage has also endured its share of scandal, and Coleen has been left publicly humiliated by Wayne’s infidelities on several occasions.

At the start of their relationship, when Wayne was just 16, he was caught visiting prostitutes, and is reported to have visited a Liverpool brothel at least 10 times – paying three separate workers, including a then 48-year-old grandmother, for sex.

Wayne called himself “young and stupid” when the news broke two years later, but in 2009, when Coleen was pregnant with their first son, Kai, it was revealed how he had spent seven nights, costing £1,200 each, with prostitute Jenny Thompson. Around the same time, it was also alleged that the then-England midfielder had a threesome with sex workers Jenny and Helen Wood.

However, Coleen has stayed by her husband’s side throughout, despite being cruelly named a “doormat” by fans who urged her to file for divorce. She even moved their family Stateside in 2018 to support Wayne playing for D.C United in Washington. But Coleen struggled away from family and friends, and Wayne yet again found himself in a compromised position when he was photographed downing shots on a 10-hour bender with a barmaid in February 2019, before accepting a lift home in a car alone with her.

Two months prior to the pictures surfacing, he had also been arrested for being drunk at an airport. Yet just six months later, the couple were embroiled in perhaps their biggest scandal to date, when Coleen famously “outed” former friend Rebekah Vardy on social media, accusing her of leaking stories to newspapers.

And while the trial both shocked and delighted fans as the drama played out in public, behind-the-scenes, the stress of the court trial quietly united Wayne and Coleen as he dutifully remained by her side throughout.

Now the source says Wayne’s care and support have proved to Coleen that their marriage has finally come out the other side.

They add, “Wayne was such a support to Coleen during her Wagatha trial. She was so touched by how he showed up. It was a sign to those who have slated her marriage and criticised her for staying with him. Her love for Wayne has never been questioned and she feels they’re really out of the other side now. She wants their vow renewal to be the start of a completely fresh slate for their marriage.”
