Now, one year later, we have decided to revisit Claudia's message of warning about the shocking trick-or-treat incident.

Matilda, who was 8-years-old at the time, was out with her mum and a group of other children and parents when her Halloween witch costume caught fire on a nearby open flame.

She was rushed to hospital and treated for severe burns.

"It was the kind of fire where someone comes up to you on the street and…"

And, more importantly, to stop any other child having to go through the same life-altering accident.

Earlier this year, Claudia Winkleman bravely decided to relive the experience in a bid to warn parents about the dangers of Halloween costumes.

“I don’t want another eight-year-old to go through what Matilda went through,” she told BBC’s Watchdog.

Visibly shaken and upset, Claudia emotionally recalled how her daughter went up in flames in a matter of seconds - and that the little girl’s tights melted into her legs.

Speaking about the trip to the hospital, Claudia explained: “The surgeon told me that it was like she’d been attacked.

"It was the kind of fire where someone comes up to you on the street and…"

She broke off, seemingly unable to continue, before adding firmly: "It was the violence of it.”

On just how serious Matilda’s burns were, she added: “It's life-changing but not life-defining. It was definitely life-changing for me.

“I can't remember life before it.”

During the programme, it was revealed that Halloween costumes are registered as toys, which has an impact on their safety testing.

Claudia hit out: “It’s not a toy because you wear it next to bare skin, because if she’d have been holding a broomstick, let’s say, which is a toy, we could have chucked that, but we couldn’t put her out fast enough.”

A Channel Mum survey of 2,000 mums showed that three quarters of them wanted stricter laws in order to make sure that kid’s fancy dress outfits are flame retardant.

And it seems as if the government has listened, as they have now agreed to crackdown on the safety of children’s costumes.

Claudia told the Mail Online: “We're extremely happy the government are taking action on this and we're so grateful to the supermarkets who are selling safer costumes.”

Sainsbury’s have promised that their children’s costumes will meet the same strict fire regulations that apply to nightwear, and Tesco and Asda have also vowed to apply more rigorous testing.

In the meantime, Paul Hancock of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service told The Sun: “As Halloween and Bonfire Night get closer, I would urge parents to be extra vigilant and to make sure if youngsters are wearing fancy dress clothing they are nowhere near naked flames.”
