Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Liam Payne went public with their relationship earlier this week, as they enjoyed a meal out with the X Factor judge’s mum.

The pair were snapped holding hands and looking very happy together.

But, as is so often the case for girlfriends of the 1D boys, Cheryl has found herself subjected to online abuse from female fans.

And she’s had enough.

However, when taking to Instagram to respond to the hurtful comments, Cheryl decided not to stop to the same level as her trolls.

Instead, she decided to educate them on female empowerment, acceptance, and the sisterhood.

Sharing a picture which read: "Girls compete with each other, Women empower one another," the X Factor star wrote: "It can be so hard at times being a girl, for so many reasons!

“But we don't have to make it harder for each other.

“Why do we still feel the need to do that? I don't understand it."

She continued: "I have always been a Girls girl, and love other strong women. That is why I surround myself with them, and that is why I try to empower others.

“Trying to pull another person down, only speaks volumes about your character! And not a thing about theirs.”

Cheryl finished on an inspiring note, writing: “There's nothing more powerful or beautiful than an inspiring, strong women that you can look up to or turn to.

“Be one!!!"

The post comes just days after Liam apparently confirmed their relationship via a thoughtful post of his own on Instagram.

Sharing a throwback photo of Cheryl, he wrote: “Happy #internationalwomensday to my favourite woman in the world.

“Hope I make you as happy as you make me.”
