It’s been over a decade since they went from best pals to frenemies when Simon Cowell famously sacked Cheryl from the US version of The X Factor via text in what he reportedly cited as “the worst mistake” he’s ever made.
And while the former X Factor co-judges have tentatively mended their relationship in recent years, insiders say Simon, 62, is keen to restore the closeness they once had by extending an olive branch and inviting the singer, 38, to his upcoming wedding to Lauren Silverman, 44.
A source says, “Despite Simon and Cheryl being back on good terms, they’ve never really been the same and that’s something that eats away at him.
“He misses Cheryl and that connection they had before their fallout, so he’s hoping that by reaching out and sending an invite it’ll prove to her how important she is to him and how much he wants to get things back to the way they were.”
Last week, Simon’s sister-in-law admitted the dad-of- one – who once swore off getting married – could turn into a “groomzilla”.
Author, Emma Cowell, 45 – who’s married to Simon’s older half-brother, Tony, 71 – said, “Simon has very clear likes and dislikes.
“I’m sure he’s got lots of ideas, plans, and maybe a few surprises for Lauren, but I imagine it will be a low-key, really special day for them.”
Insiders previously told Closer how Lauren’s devotion and support following his near- fatal biking accident in 2020 made the music mogul realise she was The One.
In a recent interview, he said, “I couldn’t see myself dating anyone again.”
And despite the couple’s jet-setting lifestyle – with a lavish multimillion-dollar mansion in Malibu – they are rumoured to be marrying in London next month.
The talent show boss recently revealed there will be “no arguments” over the guest list – with Simon insisting he would invite whoever he likes in his laid-back approach to the nuptials.
And while his “harem” of ex-girlfriends, including pop star Sinitta, are expected to attend, insiders say Cheryl will be one of a small group of celeb pals invited to the bash in a bid to keep it as intimate as possible.
The former Girls Aloud star used to have a tight bond with the pop guru, who she referred to as her “big brother” – with Simon admitting in 2012 how he wanted to have an affair with her, adding, “I adored her”.
An insider adds, “Simon doesn’t want to have some big star-studded affair and Cheryl knows that, so she was extremely touched by the invite.
“Cheryl’s hoping to attend and wants Simon to know that she’s let go of the past and couldn’t be happier that he’s finally found his soulmate. She hopes she and Simon can restore their close friendship.”
