If there’s one name synonymous with traditional luxury and indulgent self-care, it’s Champneys
But though the health and wellness retreat was established in 1925 – and was the first of its kind in the UK – Champneys is far from stuck in the past. We visited the original Champneys estate in Tring, just 40 minutes outside London – and during its 94-year legacy, other sites have opened across the Midlands and the South East.
One thing that always endures is the philosophy that health, beauty and wellbeing are inextricably intertwined, and you can expect your stay to reflect that.
From the balanced (but delicious) food on offer and limited alcohol, to the jam packed fitness schedule and numerous high tech fitness suites (and the treatments, of course, but we’ll get to those later), there’s as much of a focus here on working and nourishing your body as there is on relaxing it.
Mother's Day Moments at Champneys
Arriving in early March, we were treated to the Mother’s Day Moments package, a day, one or two-night stay including full use of the facilities and a three course dinner, as well as buffet style breakfasts and lunches.

The best part though, of course, is the range of spa treatments on offer from highly trained specialists who make you feel as if you’re their only client that day (although actually, there’s nearly 100 rooms at the resort and countless more day guests).
Included in the price of the Mother’s Day Moments is a miracle-working aromatherapy wrap with scalp massage (you can choose from relaxing, uplifting or detoxing oils) and a 55-minute manicure or pedicure for mum.
There’s also a thoughtful ‘Well Earned Treat’ giftset for mum, worth £22.
Our stay at Champneys Tring
We also indulged in a few extras – a back massage and a Radiance Renewal facial – although the number of treatments on offer is dizzying. Take a look over the online menu and choose before you head off to keep stress levels to a minimum.
This is a child-free zone, and despite the moderate size of the resort it managed to maintain a boutique feel, with most areas not feeling too crowded. Outside of the luxurious interior, the estate sprawls for 170 acres of idyllic Hertfordshire countryside with guided walks every morning and rooms opening out onto the lawn, so no need to stay inside if you want to explore.
Despite a distinctly 21st century renovation, Tring has managed to retain a sense of traditional charm and luxury. Adjacent to the main resort and connected down a short corridor is the original stately home, once belonging to the Rothschild family.
With its traditional features and furnishings still intact, this part of the building gives a fascinating insight into the early days of the health and wellbeing industry.

Though it was mainly deserted when we visited, cavernous living areas – the music room, the drawing room and what was once a conservatory – are great for sitting and unwinding, as long as you can leave your phone at the door. There are current magazines spread on every surface for your entertainment, and the value of a great book here simply cannot be underestimated.
Wifi is available in the private rooms but data coverage is limited. But while you’re here, you may just find that shutting off from the outside world is exactly what you need.
Feeling truly relaxed is a feat seldom achieved, so a trip to Champneys is well worth it.
