Last night marked the explosive return of Celebrity Big Brother - and, with it, came Katie Hopkins’ inevitable Twitter commentary about this year’s new housemates.
But, while she fired off insults at pretty much everyone taking part on the show, she seemed most incensed by 33-year-old Tila Tequila.
Taking to social media, Katie wrote: “Tila Tequila - named after a shot.
“Shame she wasn’t.”
However, while some of her followers found her comment funny, plenty were outraged that she had chosen to make a joke about gun crime so shortly after the recent #WDBJ tragedy.
“Not the best thing to say in light of yesterdays tragedy in America is it?” fumed one. “Get a life.”
“Highly inappropriate! Not surprising, but inappropriate still,” added another disappointed Twitter user.
Another challenged Katie more directly, asking: “Omg seriously? I hate the housemates but talking about someone getting shot considering recent events, really?”
“After the events in America yesterday this is hardly the right phrase to use! #NoCompassion #T**t” snapped someone else.
However Katie’s fans rallied around her to defend her from the backlash, insisting that people shouldn’t follow the former Apprentice star on Twitter if they were easily offended.
Katie’s comments come shortly after the deaths of two Virginia television journalists, who were tragically gunned down during a live broadcast.
Reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, were shot to death Wednesday morning while conducting an on-air video for WDBJ, a CBS affiliate in Roanoke.
The shooter, Vester Lee Flanagan, a former newsman at the station, later committed suicide by shooting himself.
