Justin Bieber may have been smiling in one of his mugshots, but it was a very different story away from the cameras.
The pop star wore a jail uniform and appeared in court with his attorney after being arrested for driving under the influence and drag racing in Miami.
And he soon came under fire for critics when his mugshot, which featured him grinning from ear-to-ear, was released to the public.
But the emotions came later; according to sources at US tabloid People, Justin was "crying his eyes out" when he was returned to his cell in the detention centre.
And now celebrities have taken to Twitter to speak out in defence of the young singer.
The most touching of these were those posted by fellow singer Adriana Grande, Lady Gaga, Scooter Braun and chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, who called for "compassion" in the wake of Bieber's arrest:
Lady Gaga also made sure to urge her Little Monsters to support Justin Bieber's fans, writing:
“Hey monsters. I know everyone today is taking about Justin‘s arrest and all sorts of words and judgements are happening on the Internet. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to stand up for themselves, but I think we should be supportive of Beliebers.
"They deserve, just like any other fan, to feel strong for each other and Justin so they can continue to share the bond they have through music. We may not understand everything celebrities do because there’s only so much we see, but Justin and Beliebers were ‘born this way’ too.
"Let’s spread love and compassion to Beliebers today. That is what we are all about. Can you trend #MonstersSupportBeliebers?”
However some celebrities were less impressed with Justin's actions:
His Beliebers, meanwhile, are still supporting their idol. This tweet summed up their feelings on the matter perfectly:
Meanwhile Justin Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette, recently spoke out about her son's behaviour.
She told The Sun: "I ask that people keep me and Justin in their minds. I pray for him every day.
"If Justin's struggling, don't kick him when he's down or condemn him - pray for him."
