The 54-year-old revealed that Cameron, now 18, was diagnosed with the disorder when he was six-years-old – but she and his father Patrick King suspected something was wrong before.

Speaking to The Sun, Carol said: "By that age it was hard for him to be educated anywhere as his needs were so severe. At one stage I thought I'd have to home school him, which terrified me as I didn't have the knowledge for that.

"There were times it was very hard and I did worry about his future, but I knew with extra attention from me and lots of praise he would be OK."

But former Countdown presenter Carol's determination and praise paid off, as Cameron is set to start university later this year.

Carol split from Patrick, who she also shares daughter Katie with, in 2000, and she confessed that she was forced to sacrifice her career when she became a single parent.

But Cameron is off to university this year and Katie recently graduated from Cambridge

She added: "I took a break from my television commitments because I felt I couldn't do it all."

With one child off to university and Katie recently being awarded a Master's degree in Science (Physics & Chemistry) at Cambridge, it looks like Carol made the right decision – and it understandably feeling very proud.

She added: "We're one of the few mother and daughter dues who've done science and engineering at Cambridge."
