All eyes were on music’s most powerful couple last week as they made a show-stopping entrance at the prestigious Met Gala in New York – with Beyoncé wowing crowds in a sheer Givenchy gown while her sharply-suited husband Jay-Z looked on.
But last year, the couple made headlines at the same event for all the wrong reasons when CCTV footage showed Beyoncé’s sister Solange attacking Jay-Z in a lift while the singer looked on passively.
At the time, reports raged that Solange had accused Jay-Z of being “too flirtatious” with fashion designer Rachel Roy. Jay-Z and Beyoncé, 33, then failed to attend close friend Kanye West’s wedding to Kim Kardashian later that month – at which Rachel was a guest.
And, whilst on the surface Beyoncé and Jay-Z, 45, appear to have bounced back from the scandal, insiders say the couple’s eight-year marriage is still sometimes volatile – and they even rowed before the Met Gala.
A source says: “Beyoncé and Jay got into a bust-up on the way there. They were both on edge after last year and Beyoncé told Jay he wasn’t allowed to leave her side – he then told her he didn’t want to feel on a leash.
"It led to some strong words. They put on smiles for the camera but there was tension behind the scenes."
