Naturally the fashion stakes were high as a crop of glamorous young things made their way down the red carpet.

And it looked as though little black dresses were the top choice for most, with Jessie J leading the pack in a plunging Versace frock.

The Do It Like A Dude singer shunned her usual funky style of catsuits and trainers, and opted instead for a daring floor length gown and Jimmy Choo court shoes. The star – who recently hired a new stylist to rid her of her ‘cartoon character’ look – replaced her trademark bob and red lipstick with long, poker straight locks and minimal make up as she arrived at the event.

Jessie arrived alongside American sweetheart Taylor Swift, who looked gorgeous in an Elie Saab dress, showing ex boyfriend Harry Styles, who was also attending, just what he’s missing.

The star - who split with the One Direction heartthrob at the beginning of the year after a brief three month romance – showed off her long legs through sheer panels as she walked the red carpet, completing her outfit with simple gold accessories.

Bu the little black dresses didn’t stop there. Emeli Sande, Jesse Ware, Ashley Roberts and Rebecca Fergurson all opting for the famously slimming colour.

Emeli – who took home the award for Best Solo Female Artist – looked stylish as she showed off her visible weight loss in a short dress, teaming it with her signature blonde quiff, while former X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson went for an embellished number with a thigh high split.

Rita Ora, Little Mix and Katherine Jenkins however, decided against the dark hues that seemed to reign the red carpet this year and went for a more spring/summer look.

Last year’s X Factor winners looked all grown up in an array of different outfits, with Perrie Edwards – who recently took Zayn Malik back after he was accused of cheating on her – standing out in a short lavender dress that matched her hair colour.

Katherine Jenkins, however, hit a bum note in her printed frock. The classical singer put a rare foot wrong in the style stakes in a shapeless Stella McCartney dress that swamped her curves.

And in the boys corner, One Direction looked dapper as usual in their quirky tuxedos, with each member opting for a different shirt and jacket combo. Host James Corden looked great in a velour two-piece suit while Radio One DJ Nick Grimshaw stood out in a three-piece tuxedo and printed shirt.

But it was Amy Winehouse’s dad Mitch that really stood out.

The taxi driver showed his support for his late daughter at the Brits by walking the red carpet at London's O2 in a touching outfit.

Arriving with his wife Janis, Mitch swiftly removed his coat to reveal a photograph of Amy on his back.
