The role Brad turned down was that of a cruel slave owner. Michael Fassbender eventually took on the role and Brad chose to stick with producing the movie and appearing onscreen in a smaller role as a kind Canadian plantation worker. Brad said: ‘I didn’t want my kids to see me in this role.’
The Hollywood actor said he wanted protect his offspring from the disturbing scenes and wanted to wait until his six children were older before showing them the film. He said: ‘Maybe my eldest I would, right now. I'd rather for the others to get a little bit older and understand the dynamics of the world a little more.’
The film tells the story of Solomon Northup, who was living as a free man in America before being kidnapped and sold into slavery. The film charts a dark time in US history and is said to have driven chat show host Oprah Winfrey to tears.
Brad says he is proud of the movie and says ‘It’s why I got into film in the first place.’
Brad’s partner Angelina Jolie said something similar about her motive behind film making at an awards ceremony earlier this week. She thanked Brad, saying ‘your support and your guidance make everything I do possible.’
