Boy George has revealed that 'sweet' Princess Diana shared some kind words with him during a chance encounter three decades ago and helped him turn his life around.
*The Voice *judge admitted that in the late eighties when his life was spiralling out of control as he battled with heroin and cocaine addictions, a chat with the late royal really helped him conquer his demons.
Talking to The Daily Star Sunday, George said: “I met Princess Diana and she said to me, ‘Do you know what? You’re a survivor’.
“I said I didn’t know how to take that and she assured me it was a compliment. It was such a sweet thing to say, she was like ‘You’re like me, you’re a survivor’.”
The 54-year-old singer, real name George O’Dowd, was arrested in the 1980s for heroin possession.
He was also jailed for 15 months in 2009 after being convicted of the assault and false imprisonment of escort Audun Carlsen after a £300 photo session.
George admitted: “I have reached a point in my life where that’s not something I aspire to be. I want to thrive.
“I want to be on top of things and I feel like I am now. Some people grow into themselves and I think I have done that. I feel comfortable with who I am now.
“I feel like I have this ability now to really have fun, whatever I am doing or wherever I go. So when I hear people moaning, I just think ‘Really?’. As I have got older I’ve learned to invest in happiness a bit more.”
George continued: “I think the thing when you are young and growing up in the public eye is that you do it all in front of everyone. So you make mistakes and all your trials and tribulations are out there for people to see.
“The upside is it can endear people to you because there’s that real British thing of being a survivor."
