#BlameDrake: Why it’s ridiculous to blame Serena Williams’s ‘boyfriend’ for her US Open loss

She's the most successful women's singles tennis player, ranked number one in the world, but even the best players can't win all of the time.

Serena, 33, lost her US Open semi-final game against Roberta Vinci this week, and reason people are using for her defeat is ridiculous.

It's been reported for a while that Serena is in a relationship with rapper Drake, and fans took to Twitter after the game to blame his presence in the crowd for the outcome of the game.

Soon afterwards, #BlameDrake began trending. Furious fans insisted that he shouldn't have been at the game, that he's a 'curse' and, most ludicrously, that Serena was 'thrown off' by the thought of her boyfriend watching.

One user wrote: "Drake should stay off his girl's tour #blamedrake [sic]."

Another added: "I don't watch tennis but safe to say we can #blamedrake for Serena losing [sic]."

"This is somehow Drake's fault #BlameDrake [sic]," retorted one tweeter, while another posted: "Serena lost. That's what happens when you date the Male Kardashian #BlameDrake [sic]."

Despite this loss, Serena is still one of the greatest female athletes of our time – and she didn't get there by letting her love life distract her.

Her rumoured relationship with Drake is clearly not her first and while it's undoubtedly one of her most high-profile, suggesting that it's his fault that she didn't win the game is frankly insulting to her.

Although many are using the hashtag as joke, poking fun at Drake's reputation as emotional, many are seriously suggesting there's no way Serena would have been beaten if he wasn't in attendance.

Serena will come away from this, no doubt, determined to train harder in order to keep being the best. She'll probably look at it as a positive, and work out the areas she needs to improve on.

Because you can be amazing at your job, but there is always room for improvement.

One Twitter user summed things up perfectly: "Serena is already the greatest. At this point, she's just playing to keep us entertained," they wrote. But, not missing out on the joke, they added: "Also: #BlameDrake."
