Beyoncé calls herself a “modern-day feminist”

With a back catalogue brimming with female empowerment anthems, it is not surprising that Beyoncé has signed up to headline women’s rights concert ‘Chime for a Change’ in London this summer.

Talking about the event, Beyoncé said: “I am excited for us to come together on June 1st to bring the issues of Education, Health and Justice for girls and women to the world stage.”

But in her latest interview with British Vogue out this month, Beyoncé has ducked the label of ‘feminist,’ admitting that she isn’t sure the term applies to her.

Talking about her role as a wife and a mother in the interview, the 31 year-old admitted: “That word can be very extreme...”

“But I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman.”

'I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and fearless than I've ever been'

The singer has called her tour Mrs Carter

“But I'm happily married. I love my husband.”

The singer attracted controversy earlier this year when she announced that her next show would be named ‘The Mrs Carter Show World Tour’ – a clear tribute to her husband Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter.

Since marrying Jay-Z in 2008 and becoming a first-time mother to daughter Blue Ivy in January last year, Beyoncé admits she feels like a different person.

She said: “I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I've ever been.”

“It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, "OK, this is what you were born to do." The purpose of my body became completely different.”

But home video footage included in her self-directed documentary ‘Life is but a dream,’ shown on BBC One at the weekend, would suggest that the Beyoncé's relationship with Jay has formed part of her identity for a while.

In the video from Jay-Z’s 2006 birthday, a younger Beyoncé makes a speech claiming that her boyfriend “taught her how to be a woman.”

Although her claims to ‘modern-day feminism’ will undoubtedly be called into question by critics, the singer has undeniably achieved a great deal.

'I definitely want my daughter to have goals and drive and passion- it has to be a balance'

Though Blue Ivy is only a year old, Beyoncé hopes that her daughter will have a similar sense of ambition when she grows up.

She said: “I definitely want my daughter to have goals and drive and passion - it has to be a balance.”
