The star’s parents chose a traditional way to break the news, taking out an ad in the Forthcoming Marriage section of The Times.
It reads: ‘Mr B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.’

Benedict’s representatives confirmed the news, saying they are ‘delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged.’
Sophie and Benedict have kept their relationship out of the spotlight, but earlier this year the theatre director’s mother had hinted at future nuptials.
When asked about her 36-year-old daughter and the actor, Anna said: ‘Watch this space. You never know.’

Speaking of what he looks for in a partner, Cumberbatch has previously said he looks for someone with ‘good conversation skills,’ who doesn’t have to ‘get all decked out to look good.’
He added that at the end of the day, being a team is the most important thing in a long-term relationship.
‘It’s like playing a tennis doubles match. You need to work well together if you are to stay partners for a long time.’
Many fans have been mourning Benedict’s betrothal this morning, with one tweeting: ‘Benedict Cumberbatch is engaged. The world is ending.’
