‘1.4 billion people live on less than $1.50/day,’ the 40-year-old tweeted on Monday. ‘I’m joining Live #BelowTheLine on behalf of @easterncongo. Will you?’

The star is participating as part of his efforts to draw attention to the plight of displaced people in eastern Congo.

The Oscar-winning Argo director is one of thousands who will spend $1 a day for just food and drink next week to raise funds for good causes.

British actor Tom Hiddleston is one of the celebrities supporting the campaign on this side of the Atlantic, in aid of children’s charity UNICEF.

Tom Hiddleston also took the challenge

The Avengers star completed his five-day challenge last week while tweeing details of his meals - which included boiled rice and baked potatoes.

He wrote: ‘Profoundly aware that to live truly #BelowTheLine, I would have to forego many and various privileges… I would have to surrender the roof over my head, gas, electricity, and clean, running water.’

Speaking about the experience on This Morning, Tom admitted: ‘what’s been interesting for me is my understanding my body doesn’t function well for that much.’

‘We’re so used to being able to reach for something, a piece of fruit or a cup of coffee in the morning, and so many people in the world don’t have that, they have so much less than that,’ he said.

‘This challenge is a collective stand for those people.’

Other celebrity supporters include One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush and the campaign’s star spokesperson, Hugh Jackman.
