In a huge twist last night it was revealed that Barbara Windsor is leaving EastEnders. Barbara joined the show in 1994 and played Peggy Mitchell until 2010, when she left

Since then, the actress has come back to the popular BBC One soap at various points but now, she’s finally saying goodbye.

In last night’s episode, Peggy came back to Albert Square and told Phil she was dying from the breast cancer that she previously beat in 1999.

The emotional scenes were filmed in secret back in November.

Speaking about her decision, Barbara, 78, told the Sun: “Everyone knows I love EastEnders, that will never change. Peggy is a character close to my heart but I made the decision that I need to say goodbye to her.”

Viewers took to Twitter to express their sadness at the popular soap legend’s departure. We don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet either…
